Animal Balloons
This art form began solely as an entertainment vehicle for children, at restaurants and birthday parties. A balloon artist would be hired to perform, creating dogs, cats, etc., and handing them out as party favors to guests. Soon, many adults realized that more sophisticated party favors, decorations, etc., could be done inexpensively with balloon animals. Taking it one step further, some of these adults decided to become proficient at balloon animal art themselves. Today, anyone who wishes to learn how to make balloon animals or other balloon sculpture forms can find a myriad of books and websites to help them.
The fact is that there are no real limits on this art form. Just about anything with a recognizable shape can be formed with balloons, utilizing the technique of bubbles, twists and lock-twists. Some artists choose to enhance their creations with permanent markers, thereby giving their creations “faces” and depicting actual facial features. Other artists specialize in more famous figures, reproducing the stars of animated films with amazing accuracy.
As long as no one is around with sharp objects, balloon animals have a relatively decent longevity. In addition, they are not confined to small sizes. Many artists have undertaken huge replications of mechanical objects, such as airplanes. Unlike other forms of sculpture, balloon sculptures are primarily made of air; therefore, the transport of those objects is much easier.
All in all, this art form requires trained hands, good eyes for detail and a great imagination.
