Make Balloon Animals
Yes, you can sculpt just about anything using balloons! Of course, people are used to animals and aircraft, but now there are specific twisting and bubble patterns to depict people as well as awards. Would you believe a balloon Oscar??
All balloon sculptures begin with inflated oblong balloons that have been secured with a knot at the end. Most balloon artists use balloon pumps for inflation, as it is considered hazardous to manually inflate balloons. The chemical and powder content of the balloons is not meant for human consumption. Even though inflating a balloon is considered a favorite childhood activity, there have been dire consequences to ingesting some of the chemicals contained therein.
The fun starts when a skilled artist begins twisting the one long shape into separate secure bubble sections. These sections are sometimes folded, placed within each other and then “locked,” using a special twist technique, to create specific characters, machines, animals, and the like. Some balloon artists like to create wearable art, including headgear.
Each animal or figure has a particular series of bubbles and twists. Think of this sequence as a “recipe,” of sorts. Like a good recipe, the order of the twists, (or ingredients) is paramount to success. In some instances, you are holding one bubble in place while simultaneously constructing other bubbles; therefore, dexterity is a key talent to successful balloon sculpture construction. With practice and immunity to “squeaky” sounds, you should become proficient in a very short period of time.
